Thanks to AMS and Chapman Consulting Group for this infographic of the use of social media in HR and recruitment in Asia Pacific. Takeaways: 100% of HR and communications workers in Asia Pacific utilise social media compared to 78% of HR managers. 85% of recruiters in Asia Pacific use social media 90% using LinkedIn, compared to 63% using Facebook and 31% using Twitter. Singapore are known as the embracers they understand social media and use it more frequently, more extensively and more purposes than other areas. Australia are the communicators they like to talk and listen through social media and like to focus on employer branding and sourcing. Hong Kong arent totally convinced of the positives of using social media for recruitment, however they use it for many other activities. Interview Where Do You See Yourself in 5 Years - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Among the silliest questions you get in a job interview, is the one that wonât die: âWhere do you see yourself in five years?â If youâve written a business plan, you know your five-year forecast is the least reliable outcome you âpredict.â Same thing when you ponder your investment portfolio, the height of your infant, or the state of your love life. There are days when I cannot make a good guess about whatâs going to happen five minutes from now. Clearly the question about where youâre going to be in five years is ridiculous. Well, sort of ridiculous. The five year question is meant to show you have some personal insight, that you spent time reflecting on your goals, and you have a sense that the job youâre interviewing for fits into your overall life plan. A great answer doesnât guarantee a bus wonât hit you as you leave the interview, which of course might change everything. However, a great answer to âwhere do you see yourself in five yearsâ is a chance for you to shine, in the here and now. This week I coached an 83-year-old woman on this question. Lauraine recently had her hours changed at the hospital where sheâs worked for more than two decades, as a patient advocate. Administration moved her start time from early morning to late afternoon. So, sheâs about to go on a job hunt. Her goal is to find a place where her being wide awake and cheery at 7 AM is to everyoneâs advantage. Lauraine reached out to me because this is the toughest question she fears she might encounter in a job interview. My uncle is a few years older than she is, and recently started working in the pro shop at a country club. So, like almost all tough questions: I have already helped answer this one successfully. Hereâs what I recommended Lauraine say. Thank you for asking! My plan is to continue working in a customer service position. I like listening with empathy to people, helping solve their problems and putting a smile on their faces. If you are a bit younger, or quite a bit younger, with the desire to have greater responsibility in some capacity â" then your answer will focus on a longer term career path. Show how you see the position youre interviewing for, will enrich your future value to the organization. Your answer might be: My plan is to continue to be in administration, enlarging my skill set so I can effectively administer increasingly complex projects. I see myself developing people and leading a strong team, and becoming a person that this organization can count on â" and be proud of. Expand Your Community with 30 Days of Networking Days 6-10 So, how did the first 5 days go? Good I hope! If you havent read them yet, make sure you check out this post (CLICK HERE). Position yourself as a center of influence the one who knows the movers and shakers. People will respond to that, and youll soon become what you project. Day 6: Make a list of people you have lost touch with. Sometimes it feels like there is not enough time in a day to stay involved in the lives of our family and friends. Make a list today of all the friends and family members that you would like to catch up with. Day 7: Make a 4 X 4 list and contact these people. Make a plan to meet with 4 people that you already know and 4 people that you dont know. Call and email these people to see if they would be interested in meeting with you over the next month or two. (Remember that you dont have to meet these 8 people in person, you can always practice your interview skills over the phone also!) Day 8: Do research on the 4 people you donât know. To make sure that you make a great impression and get the most out of the informational interview, make sure you research their industry, their company and their background. Linkedin and Google are very useful tools for this. Remember, the goal of this meeting is to get a referral to speak with someone else, so you must be as knowledgeable as possible and put your best foot forward even though this isnt a real job interview. You never know who they might know and be able to refer you to! Day 9: Write out the questions you will ask during the interviews. After doing research about who you will be meeting with, make a list of all the questions. Some great questions are: What is your typical day like? How did you get your job and how do you recommend someone like me get into your field? How is the economy affecting your industry? What do you like most about the company you work for? Do you know of other people whom I might talk to who have similar jobs? Save a document with these questions online so that you always have it handy to print or refer to. Day 10: Review your interview outfits. Do you have a comfortable interview outfit that you can be confident in? Try on what you plan to wear to the informational interview and look at yourself in the mirror. Do you look professional? If not, spend some time today at the mall so that you can make sure you will be comfortable.
